Description
The iconic Eiffel Tower has become the most recognizable symbol of Paris and is currently the most visited paid monument in the world, averaging almost seven million visitors per year. Named after Gustave Eiffel, whose company designed and built the tower, it was constructed 1887-1889 as a gateway to the World's Fair. At 1,063 feet tall, it is about the same height as an 81 story building and is the tallest structure in Paris. The tower held the distinction of being the tallest structure in the world for 41 years until the Chrysler Building in New York usurped that honor in 1931.
