Description
South Africa is home to the Cape Floral Kingdom, one of six botanical classifications in the world. Although this kingdom only represents .5% of the area of Africa, it has 20% of the continent's flora. Star of this kingdom is the protea plant, and there are many varieties and many colors within this group. The king protea, the variety with the largest bloom and the national flower of South Africa, has blooms that are four to six inches in diameter. These flowers are also commonly called sugar bushes and do well in arrangements due to their long vase life. When I discovered these beauties on a recent visit to Africa, it was like finding a whole new world. This image was taken at the Kirstenbosch Gardens in Cape Town and is not the King Protea, but another variety that lined the walkway as we first started our garden tour. I would love to be able to cultivate these exotic plants in my backyard, but from what I can determine through initial research, it appears that may be impossible. I'm glad I took plenty of pictures!
