Description

Depicting the essence of double sacrifice, I was drawn to the beauty of this fresco that I discovered in an obscure corner of Saint Nizier Catholic Church in Troyes, France. I love the soft colors and painting style of the crucifix itself, emphazing the sacrifice of Jesus Christ on the cross, but upon closer inspection, I noticed the names of fallen soldiers of World War I from Troyes that make up the backgound of the painting. Shapes, shadows, morning light streaming through the stained glass windows, and the little detail of the cross in the lower right corner of the photograph all make for a compelling image and bring back fond memories of a day spent exploring Troyes, France.
